CLEARWATER — Defending a driver accused of leaving the scene of a fatal crash can be daunting, lawyers say, particularly when the defendant, before facing a jury, is convicted in the court of public opinion in these often high-profile cases. Charles Winzenread, 45, was taken into custody more than two weeks after two pedestrians were killed in a hit-and-run collision on Clearwater Beach on Oct. 18. Before his arrest, however, he was named as the owner of the Mercedes SUV police identified as being involved.
